Choose my next adventure!

I always carry a book with me; you never know when you'll have a few spare minutes to read a few pages. For my next book, I thought it would fun to have you choose what I read. These are all books that have been made into film adaptations, or vice versa. I actually didn't realize this until I picked the first four and decided to go with the theme. As you can see, most of my books are from Goodwill. Those stickers are such a pain to get off!

In case you haven't heard of these, here are the synopsis from Goodreads.

The Wild ThingsThe Wild Things — based very loosely on the storybook by Maurice Sendak and the screenplay cowritten with Spike Jonze — is about the confusions of a boy, Max, making his way in a world he can’t control.

AtonementOn a hot summer day in 1934, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis witnesses a moment’s flirtation between her older sister, Cecilia, and Robbie Turner, the son of a servant and Cecilia’s childhood friend. But Briony’s incomplete grasp of adult motives—together with her precocious literary gifts—brings about a crime that will change all their lives. As it follows that crime’s repercussions through the chaos and carnage of World War II and into the close of the twentieth century, Atonement engages the reader on every conceivable level, with an ease and authority that mark it as a genuine masterpiece.

Hemlock GroveThe body of a young girl is found mangled and murdered in the woods of Hemlock Grove, Pennsylvania, in the shadow of the abandoned Godfrey Steel mill. A manhunt ensues—though the authorities aren’t sure if it’s a man they should be looking for.

Some suspect an escapee from the White Tower, a foreboding biotech facility owned by the Godfrey family—their personal fortune and the local economy having moved on from Pittsburgh steel—where, if rumors are true, biological experiments of the most unethical kind take place. Others turn to Peter Rumancek, a Gypsy trailer-trash kid who has told impressionable high school classmates that he’s a werewolf. Or perhaps it’s Roman, the son of the late JR Godfrey, who rules the adolescent social scene with the casual arrogance of a cold-blooded aristocrat, his superior status unquestioned despite his decidedly freakish sister, Shelley, whose monstrous medical conditions belie a sweet intelligence, and his otherworldly control freak of a mother, Olivia.
Boy in the Striped PajamasWhen Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move from their home to a new house far far away, where there is no one to play with and nothing to do. A tall fence running alongside stretches as far as the eye can see and cuts him off from the strange people he can see in the distance.

But Bruno longs to be an explorer and decides that there must be more to this desolate new place than meets the eye. While exploring his new environment, he meets another boy whose life and circumstances are very different to his own, and their meeting results in a friendship that has devastating consequences.
This is Where I Leave YouThe death of Judd Foxman’s father marks the first time that the entire Foxman family—including Judd’s mother, brothers, and sister—have been together in years. Conspicuously absent: Judd’s wife, Jen, whose fourteen-month affair with Judd’s radio-shock-jock boss has recently become painfully public.

Simultaneously mourning the death of his father and the demise of his marriage, Judd joins the rest of the Foxmans as they reluctantly submit to their patriarch’s dying request: to spend the seven days following the funeral together. In the same house. Like a family.

As the week quickly spins out of control, longstanding grudges resurface, secrets are revealed, and old passions reawakened. For Judd, it’s a weeklong attempt to make sense of the mess his life has become while trying in vain not to get sucked into the regressive battles of his madly dysfunctional family. All of which would be hard enough without the bomb Jen dropped the day Judd’s father died: She’s pregnant.

Sew Similar #17

Sew Similar #16
dress pattern fabric shoes tights sweater

This week's Sew Similar is a dress I'm actually working on right now. I'm making my Halloween costume using this same pattern, but with the planet fabric I showed you all earlier. Also, I found out that it glows in the dark and now I'm extra excited about it! For this version of the dress, I'm using a mustard yellow polka dot fabric I picked up a few months ago. Yellow is my favorite color and especially in fall I love the darker mustard hues. This ready made dress is from Le Bomb Shop on eBay, selling for $43.99. With the handmade dress and rest of the outfit, it comes to $59.84. Do you work on multiple projects at once or do you prefer to do them one at a time?

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Weekly Tidbits #17

source source source
Watching: Hemlock Grove I kept hearing about this show and finally decided to give it a try. I'm still a little unsure on how I feel about the show. I think it may be one that I like but don't necessarily love. I've been keeping it on in the background while doing homework and sewing so I am a little confused as to what's going on. The transformation scene was wicked cool though and way more gory than something you would normally see on television.

Working on: my Halloween costume! I made some progress this week and so far have cut out all the pieces and just have to sew everything together. I'm also making another dress with the same pattern in a different fabric. I figured it's probably easier to just cut out all the pieces at once and then I can sew everything at the same time. Are any of you dressing up for Halloween?

Making:
Chantal over at Pony Chops has created the cutest cross stitch pattern of a pinata. The best part is, she's made it available for free! I think cross stitching, like a lot of crafts, has an association with the older generation, but you can really make some cute, modern designs. I haven't tried cross stitching since I was a kid, but now I'm dreaming up all kinds of cross stitched goodies to make.

Reading: Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk. He is the author of Fight Club (one of my favorite books/ movies) and I've read several of his other novels. I really like his books because they are different from anything else I read. He has a very distinct writing style though, and I can't read more than one of his books in a row. I have to break it up with something a little more lighthearted.

Loving: the cooler weather. We had a pretty big storm right before the Autumn equinox and ever since it's been officially fall, the temperature has dropped like crazy. The low for the past couple nights has been in the 30's and I've had to bundle up at work to stay warm. At least I can wear tights now!

Excited About: The Boxtrolls I think I've mentioned before how excited I am to see this movie, but it's finally out in theaters! Between work, school, and my husband being under the weather, we haven't had a chance to watch it yet. Hopefully this weekend we will be able to. I've been looking forward to it since seeing the first "making of" trailer. I'm sure it will be amazing!

Thrift Haul

I don't know about you guys, but, I'm a huge fan of thrift stores. It's actually how I started reading blogs in the first place. Somehow in high school, I found the Wardrobe Remix group on flickr and saw all these awesome, stylish ladies, a lot of whom, frequented thrift stores. Many of the people in the group also had blogs and it kind of snowballed from there. I used to be really interested in fashion but, over time, I realized that I wasn't really a fan of fashion, but style. I like to see interesting outfits people put together in everyday life. Life is much too short for boring clothes!
I recently found out that there's a Savers in my town by getting a coupon in the mail, and of course I can't pass up a good coupon. This one was for 30% off your total, which is amazing! Now, as much as I love thrift stores, I won't deny that there is a a certain smell that goes along with used clothing. I always wash everything I get though, so I don't really mind too much. My husband and I walked into the store and were shocked. It was the cleanest and most well-organized secondhand store I've been in; it reminded me of a Ross or TJ Maxx. We found quite a few items as well. My husband got a couple scarves for winter, and I got two tops, a dress, and this book on the making of Epcot. With our coupon, everything came to about $15; it was a really great haul. Do you shop at thrift stores? Or do you prefer your items brand new?

Weekly Tidbits #16

source
Watching: Stand by Me I've been trying to get my husband to watch this movie for ages and he finally broke down (he ended up liking it). It's such a good movie and surprisingly, it is based on a story by Stephen King. It's not a scary or gory movie by any means, and is really about childhood friendships. It reminds me a lot of The Goonies. There are a lot of famous actors in this movie as well, including Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, and a bleach blonde Kiefer Sutherland.

Working on: creating lesson plans for my student teaching. I actually have a double major, one of which is secondary education in physics. This is my first education class so we are teaching a younger group and it's not necessarily within your major's topic. I'll be teaching 6th graders about area and perimeter next week.

Making: slow progress on my cat scarf. So far I've only finished her head and I think I may have added a couple stitches somewhere along the lines. It's nice to have something to do in my anthropology class though. Seriously, the most boring class I've been in. It's a huge lecture with 200+ people so I can hide in the back with my crocheting.

Reading: I finished Landline in less than 24 hours. I really loved it, as I do all of Rainbow Rowell's books. I don't even know if I can pick a favorite. In all of her books, I've been able to relate to the characters in some way. Now that I'm married, I found there were things I could relate to with Georgie, that I probably wouldn't have been able to before.

Loving: pumpkin donuts, pumpkin chai-cheesecake milkshakes (I promise it's delicious), pumpkin english muffins, pumpkin everything! I love fall because the grocery stores st. art carrying all of the delicious pumpkin treats. As the weather cools, I really get in a baking mood and I have all sorts of pumpkin goodies planned. Pumpkin Cinnamon bread anyone?

Excited About: my parents getting a new puppy! They will be getting a bulldog puppy from a friend soon, and I can't wait to see it. I love animals and while I would love to have a dog of my own, it's really not feasible. Between work and school, I'm not home nearly enough to take care of a dog and my cats would probably be very upset if I allowed a newcomer into the household. Maybe someday, but for now, I'll live vicariously through everyone else.

Little Tidbits:
freshly dyed hair ♥ great thrifting finds ♥ realizing the semester is already almost half over ♥ finally being able to wear tights ♥ putting new music on my ipod

Sew Similar #15

Sew Similar #15

Is anyone else a bit in shock that September is almost over? It's crazy how quickly this year has gone by. Tomorrow is the autumn equinox, marking the first day of fall, which means that winter and the holiday season are right around the corner. Winter usually means lots of parties and events so today I'm featuring a little party dress to get you in the festive mood.

This dress is originally $129.99 from ModCloth. I've purchased a few things in the past from ModCloth and never were really satisfied with them, so now I just browse their site for inspiration. I am a polka dot hoarder so I absolutely love this dress. I normally stay away from ruching, but I think it looks great with this lightweight fabric; it helps to keep it from adding bulk. The pattern I chose has a halter neck, but this could easily be switched to shoulder straps, depending on your preference. The price for the handmade outfit is just $59.52, leaving plenty left over for Christmas shopping! I've actually already started getting gifts for friends and family, although I'm going to make a majority of them. Are you already thinking about the holidays or is it still too far off?

Weekly Tidbit #15

This is a not-so-weekly tidbit since I missed last week's. It's been very, very busy around here with school and work, but, here's a little of what's going on with me!
source source  source
Watching: Arrested Development I've seen a  few episodes of this show here and there but never really watched them in order. My husband and I just started watching it on Netflix, and it's hilarious. Buster is definitely my favorite character.

Working on: determining the topic of my research paper for my invertebrate paleontology class. I think I am going to write it on mass extinction.I'm trying to tie in astronomy so I am going to be focusing on large impacts, most likely the Chicxulub impact (the one that killed off the dinosaurs). It has to be 10 pages long, so I'm trying to make it interesting to me.

Making: my house a little more functional. We recently rearranged our living room/ dining area and it is SO much better. Living in a small space, it's easy to get stuck thinking there's only one way the furniture will fit. We stuck our dining table long ways along the wall, so now I have a sewing area and desk for homework. It's crazy how refreshing it is to have a new space.

Reading: I finally finished Hyde. I actually really enjoyed it, it just took me a while since I've just been reading quite a bit less for pleasure now that school has started. With all of the reading for my classes, I don't have a lot of spare time to read comics and books. I usually bring a book with me to school to read in between classes, but, if there's homework , I try and finish that first. Next I'll be starting Landline by Rainbow Rowell. Although, I think I'm going to start a paperback as well since it'll be lighter in my backpack.

Loving: Spooky Symphonies It's a Pandora station with instrumentals, mostly from movie scores (which I love). I've been listening to it while working on homework and it's great. It's a lot of Danny Elfman and Harry Potter music (the best kind of music). I like to have background noise at all times but t.v. can be distracting when I should be focusing on school work. Do you listen to music while you work? Any suggestions?

Excited About: If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen that I've decided on a Halloween costume. I've been wanting to do it for a couple years, but this year I'll finally be Ms. Frizzle! I went to Joann's this weekend and got the fabric since I had a coupon. I was initially going to get a different fabric and they ended up being out of stock. I'm actually really happy I got this one instead. Have any of you decided on a costume yet?

Jewelry Organization Makeover

I don't normally wear a lot of jewelry; it's one of those things that tend to get forgotten as I'm rushing out the door in the morning. Especially with school in session, I have to leave my house by 7:30 am, and I like to sleep in as long as possible. In an effort to wear more of the jewelry I have, I decided to finally organize it all. I keep my jewelry and pins in a small drawer in my bathroom. Living in a small apartment, I don't have a ton of storage. Previously, everything was just thrown in the drawer. Even if I wanted to try and wear a particular necklace, it would take ten minutes just to untangle it form the rest. I also had a lot of loose earrings and it would take forever to find the match. As you can see, it was not pretty.

I got these little plastic baggies at the dollar store ages ago. They were just sitting in my craft stash and so I finally put them to good use. The best part about them is they are clear so you know exactly what you're looking at without having to open up the bag.

I've seen a lot of really cute storage units online, but, without a lot of counter space, it's hard to find something functional. This method of storage really works for me. It looks so much better now, and I've already worn more jewelry this past week! It's so quick and easy to just rifle through my drawer and pick out what I want to wear that day. How do you all store your jewelry and accessories?

Sew Similar #14

Sew Similar #14

To me, plaid is the perfect fall and winter pattern. It's just so cozy; especially paired with a cable knit cardigan, and a beanie (this one has little cat ears!). I also really love oxfords. They're just as cute as ballet flats, but a little more practical. One thing I've learned since starting school, is that ballet flats are not made for walking long distances. I have the blisters to prove it. This dress from ModCloth, is $89.99 vs. $60.01 for the handmade outfit. That's about $30 in savings, plus you get the rest of the outfit! Definitely worth it. What patterns or colors do you associate with the seasons?
